Not so much a stronger one, as less expensive ones. There are some evolutions of SDRAM that add little to cost, use the same production and testing equipment, and substantially improve performance.

One is just faster SDRAM. PC166 is already available from:
memoryetc.com

Another is DDR DRAM, being readied by most DRAM producers but without a chipset until Q1 of next year. The one I find most interesting right now is Virtual Channel DRAM - technology developed by NEC and made available without royalties. It reduces latency, the real problem for PC's, and can be combined with DDR technology to increase bandwidth if that is actually needed. VC DRAM is supported by VIA's KX133 chipset that is sampling now and will be available in roughly the same time frame as Rambus.

Rambus is an excellent technology, just too expensive and too difficult to manufacture, at least for the next year - maybe forever. (this is my opinion, you'll get lots of opposing viewpoints on this thread, and the market has been very supportive of Rambus for the last few days - I'm just offering my point of view)
