I would agree with you, Michael, that people can change their values, and rather drastically at that.

I think it is much harder to change one's basic temperament. In my observation, temperament is more a given of Nature than a product of Nurture. Thus, I would say that although it can be modified, it cannot be changed altogether.

Hence, there is always going to be some continuity of personality in any given individual, however much his/her values may change over time.

Just my take.
