I don't disagree that people can change dramatically at all- or what a mess we would be, stuck forever in our five year old brains, but I do think that a great deal of the personality is formed very, very early in life. Certainly the ability to trust, to love, to relate, springs from the primary relationships with a caregiver and affects all future relationships. It's very difficult to alter the beliefs that you were taught early in life. (Hence that old Catholic saying- "Give me a child until he's seven....) But we thankfully, have the ability to reason, to learn, to change, and even to impose by will new behaviors on top of old.
