What Roosevelt understood -- even in his illness, was that no American or Englishman was willing to fight a ground war to expel the Soviets from Eastern Europe. The overeagerness with which the U.S. disarmed and threw away its powerful forces came as no surprise to FDR who had seen Congress and the Republicans destroy the 1916 fleet that Wilson had laid down. Churchill, insightful as he was, could never understand that the US was going to boot him out of office as quickly as it could. Yalta was a situation where one had to do as well as someone could. On the way back, Roosevelt, sick as he was, sewed up Saudi oil for the US.
