Paging Dies In Japan

By Reuters

KANSAI TELE-MESSAGE, a Japanese pager service operator, Wednesday said it had decided to halt operations because its number of subscribers had plunged by more than 80 percent in four years, as mobile phones took over in popularity.

The company said it would stop taking new subscribers in October and cease providing services by the end of the year.

It hoped to begin legal procedures for its liquidation in January, a company official said.

The company has debts totaling 18 billion yen ($162.4 million), he added.

Its major shareholders include Kansai Electric Power and Japan Telecom.

Kansai Tele-Message's number of subscribers has dropped to less than 150,000 from 740,000 in June 1995, the company said.

In May, another pager service operator, Tokyo Telemessage, filed for bankruptcy with debts totaling 25 billion yen ($225.5 million). However, it said it would seek to rehabilitate its business with assistance from its shareholders.
