Mike,

I think you have taken this to the extreme somewhat. Gemstar's technology essentially covers all means of data transfer thus allowing the seamless integration of said signals into a single user-friendly and interactive interface/guide/portal/gateway. They do not claim rights to vague usages but to those application specific as setforth in their over 2,500 issued patent claims.

As far as Intellectual Property Rights in general I could not disagree more. The term 'rights' is only used once in the Constitution(prior to the Bill of Rights)and that is in regards to IPR. If we as a nation start to devalue such rights at home how can we expect other nations to respect them? Many countries can take our ideas and duplicate them at a small fraction of the cost if it were a royalty free process without law. I would love a Pentium chip for a few dollars or MS software for cents but in my opinion this would be disastrous for the United States. Our system, as we know it, would collapse if not for the vigorous enforcement of such rights and severe penalties for violations.

Regards
Stew
