loosening up the search criteria so it shows up under web hosting without having to type in "business"...those thoughts I think still hold some merit.

I think it would be a bad idea to add special rules to the sorting of results to give GNET properties special placement. This kind of issue comes up all the time in media. If special rules for the parent company are in place, then the medium becomes less trustworthy.

Other examples: Should Time magazine give special consideration to Warner Bros. movies? Should they feature them more often with cover stories or more prominent placement in the review section?

In fact, most media analysts have concluded that Time has answered "No" to both questions since the TWX merger. They've been given credit for seeming to pay less attention to WB movies.

What I tried to suggest yesterday, is that there are ways to move the results up in the Metacrawler returns without giving them special consideration. I think it's a great idea to do that, but GNET properties should have to follow the same methods used by any other web site.

[BTW... I made a mistake in last night's post. Because of the way LookSmart results are presented in MetaCrawler results (with a Go2Net banner at the top), I thought they had picked it up in one of their purchases. When looking more closely, I notice that it's still independent.]
