I think goto.com is setup in this way, where an advertiser can pay for placement within their search capability. They are. It's an Inktomi engine that lets sites pay to get their sites moved to the top of a listing. At least they've always said that they do that, even though some users who aren't paying attention might not know it. Fortunately, GoTo loses a good deal of respect in any review because of the process. They have no interest in serving the user by returning the "best" search results for a query. Instead, they serve their advertisers by feeding out specialized commercials when one enters a search. I don't know why anyone would use GoTo when they can get the same basic search engine on HotBot without the spam weightings, but then again, Home Shopping Network is a hit for some to-me-unfathomable reason, so I'm not one to judge such things.
