kap - <Thread, I interpret Compaq's response as follows:
1. Compaq is not going to lift a finger to help Merced. They will build Merced servers only if the customers will force them to. They are proclaiming to continue 64 bit NT on Alpha development. If you believe that then they have a nice bridge to sell you.

2. Compaq will concentrate on 64 bit Unix and Linux implementations on Alpha and will try to corner the 64-bit server market for the Alpha platform. They are intimately familiar with 64 bit NT and Merced. They are betting big that NT on Merced is going nowhere fast.>

Boy, you are the eternal optimist. I don't think this is it at all. I get just the opposite message that CPQ is firmly on board with IA64, at least on NT. It was rather prominently mentioned several times in the response. CPQ has a lot invested in NT64. Your scenario implies that CPQ is also going to snub MSFT, and believes that the NT64 market is not worth going after. I just don't see that as realistic.

I have also seen other anecdotal evidence that CPQ is going to "lift a finger", but it would be inappropriate for me to share that here. IDF is coming up this week. I expect IA64 to be a prominent feature. Maybe we can glean something there.
