In all fairness, the conservatives do the same damned thing ... under the protective mantle of championing our endangered moral fiber.

I suspect one of the problems here is that "liberal" meant something quite different than it means today. It used to be close to what the adjective "libertarian" connotes today - primarily concerned with individual civil liberties. But the term has undergone semantic drift, and what we call "liberal" in the USA today would handily be recognized anywhere else in the world as "socialist". But we can't use that word - not without rousing the anticommunist spectres of our recent past.
