I think Einstein claimed he was a physicist who mostly worked by intuition. He was a notoriously ill-prepared mathematician. He needed a lot of help proving anything. Most of his ideas he claimed were intuitive. Asked what he would have felt if the confirmation of his general theory had failed, he said that he would have felt sorry for the good Lord because the theory was right! By the way, Clerk Maxwell was an earlier generation and died in 1879.
