Gee, You'all must burn the midnight oil in Houston.
Certainly, no problem dropping Nt32 and 64 off Alpha if that is the way to go. But it doesn't seem like it was very considerate not to inform MSFT beforehand.
Second; I was looking to purchase an Alpha based workstation basically for Linux, but it would be nice to be able to run 32 bit MSFT. This ought to be reasonably mature by now whether CPQ supports it or not. Should not the speed lost by translation be somewhat compensated for by the increased CPU, buss, and memory speed of Alpha now at 833 Mhz?
Third, granted that Merced and IA64 are less than the best systems, doesn't it give Merced the edge that it can run all Wintel 32 bit offerings? This may not be important in the special purpose server market, but I can see advantages in workstations and general purpose servers. (This is not to say that Linux is not superior in workstations).
Fourth: CPQ is saying that NT32 has come of age and has the scalability and the reliability to compete with Unix in the 24/365 market. No doubt it is some feat to herd 8 Intel processors together, but whether it is going to run Sun off the map is highly problematical. |
