Cadence Quickly Integrates OrCAD Technology, Rolls Out New PCB Product Families
New Cadence PCB Systems Division Targets High-end, Mainstream and Shrink-wrap Market Segments; First Deliverables Include New Product Programs
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 30, 1999-- Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (NYSE:CDN - news), the world's leading provider of electronic design products and services, today announced the new PCB Systems Division formed by the merger of OrCAD, Inc. with the Cadence printed-circuit board (PCB) software business, completed less than a month ago.

The Cadence PCB Systems Division, the worldwide PCB market leader, is headed by Mike Bosworth, former CEO of OrCAD. It serves the industry's largest customer base for PCB design software and services with a unique line-up of three distinct product series targeting the high-end, mainstream (ready-to-use), and shrink-wrap segments.

The new division's first deliverables also include new product configurations and pricing programs designed to reshape the ready-to-use and shrink-wrap PCB market segments.

''The goal of the PCB Systems Division is to deliver the best possible value to customers in each of its key markets,'' said Bosworth, senior vice president of the Cadence PCB Systems Division. ''To do this, we are aligning ourselves closely with our customers' current and emerging requirements. The new product offerings we've put together take full advantage of the strengths and synergies of the Cadence and OrCAD technologies.''

Bosworth continued, ''In the four short weeks since the completion of the OrCAD acquisition, we have gotten our 450-person team fully integrated. I will be working very closely with vice president of marketing Dave DeMaria, who made the Cadence PCB Group a market leader over the past several years. Jim Plymale, the key visionary behind activeparts.com, will continue to drive this cutting-edge Internet initiative. The strong team we have put together promises to deliver even more value to our customers.''

New Product Series Address All PCB Market Segments

The Cadence PCB Systems Division has combined the existing Cadence and OrCAD products into enhanced PCB flows that comprise a suite of powerful, ready-to-use tool suites. These suites are designed to boost productivity and address customers' ease-of-use and emerging-technology requirements.

-- The Cadence® PCB Expert Series serves high-end, power users,
giving them additional capability by integrating the existing
Cadence product flow (Concept® HDL design entry, Allegro®
expert layout, SPECCTRA(TM) router and SPECCTRAQuest(TM)
interconnect designer) with two key pieces of OrCAD technology:
PSpice®, and optionally, OrCAD Capture CIS(TM) (Component
Information System). Basic configurations in the PCB Expert
Series begin at $10,000.

-- The Cadence PCB Studio Series includes PCB design studio
(formerly Allegro Studio), which combines Allegro PCB layout with
SPECCTRA, library management software, and the customer's choice
of Concept HDL or OrCAD Capture CIS. In addition, PSpice A/D
Basics will be bundled in. For high-speed PCB designs that
require signal integrity analysis, SPECCTRAQuest signal explorer
(formerly Allegro Studio signal explorer) is available as an
option. Finally, a new tool suite aimed at field-programmable
gate array (FPGA) designers will be announced soon, rounding out
the PCB Studio Series as a complete design solution for the
mainstream user. PCB design studio will maintain its software
price at $9,995.

-- The OrCAD Series features the popular, affordable OrCAD products
that designers in the PCB shrink-wrap market have come to depend
on -- OrCAD Capture®, OrCAD Layout® and PSpice. The SPECCTRA
router is now an integrated part of this product flow. Pricing
for products in the OrCAD Series begins at $1,495. (For more
details on pricing for the OrCAD Series, see the product pricing
programs section below.)
Dave DeMaria, vice president of marketing for the Cadence PCB Systems Division, stated, ''These new product series bring together the best of the existing Cadence and OrCAD offerings, retaining all of the products from both lines and adding new capabilities to meet the full range of customer needs. We're especially pleased at how quickly we've been able to bring the technology from both teams to our customers.''

DeMaria added, ''In particular, the Cadence PCB Studio Series exemplifies the 'instant integration' of the two product lines to create unique new configurations aimed at the mainstream user, by adding OrCAD's PSpice and a unified flow with the OrCAD front end and the Cadence high-speed and PCB layout solutions. We are excited by the many new opportunities the merging of these products and technologies will afford.''

In support of these product series, the Cadence PCB Systems Division will offer a broad set of enterprise services, including technical support, tool education, flow-based user training, methodology assessment, and implementation planning.

Product Pricing Programs Reshape Shrink-Wrap Market

First deliverables from the Cadence PCB Systems Division to OrCAD Series customers include new Millennia Suites, featuring significantly reduced prices, and Cadence SPECCTRA routing technology to provide a power boost for shrink-wrap users.

-- Millennia EE (Engineer's Edition) Suite: Combining OrCAD Capture,
PSpice A/D Basics, and OrCAD Layout featuring a gridded
auto/interactive router, this suite of products is designed for
engineers involved in the PCB layout process. Priced at $4,495,
including one year's maintenance, the Millennia EE bundle is 44
percent off the current list price for a standalone version of
OrCAD Layout.

-- Millennia Plus Suite: Created for the PCB layout designer, this
suite of products combines OrCAD Capture CIS, PSpice A/D Basics,
and OrCAD Layout with SmartRoute, a powerful gridless autorouter.
At $6,995, this bundle represents a savings of 39 percent off the
list price of OrCAD Layout Plus, including one year's
maintenance.

-- OrCAD customers can add the scalable, industry-standard Cadence
SPECCTRA autorouter to their Layout tools starting at $5,800.
And, for $5,000, OrCAD Layout Plus, Layout, and Layout Engineer's
Edition customers can trade an existing product license for a
Cadence PCB design studio bundle license.
New Division Leverages Powerful, Combined Distribution Channels

With the acquisition of OrCAD, the Cadence PCB Systems Division now offers products worldwide through an integrated sales model that combines the Cadence global account sales team, a dedicated field sales team, inside sales, and value-added resellers. These four strong channels enable Cadence to effectively reach the entire spectrum of the PCB market worldwide.

According to Bosworth, ''In today's global market, distribution channels are a competitive advantage. In addition to the world class Cadence global account team and OrCAD's world class inside sales, we'll be fielding a strong, dedicated PCB direct sales team. It's clear that the Cadence and OrCAD channels are the most comprehensive in the EDA industry.''
