Asante Chosen to Provide LSU Students With High-Speed Internet Access SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 30, 1999-- Robust Feature Set and Price Prompt Network Designer
to Equip Off-Campus Apartments with Asante Hubs and Switches
Asante Technologies, Inc., (NASDAQ: ASNT) was selected to supply the networking hardware for Tiger Plaza, a large student apartment complex just outside the campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
R.W. Day and Associates, the company that operates Tiger Plaza as well as several other apartment properties, recently began adding high-speed Internet access to the amenities they offer tenants. According to the chief network planner, Jay Smeltzer of G.E.C., Inc. (Gulf Engineers), the idea has proven to be enormously effective.
"It's totally cost-prohibitive for a student to get high speed Internet access," said Smeltzer. "R.W. Day recognized this and filled a market void by providing every student the equivalent of a T1 connection. The places fill-up fast and then there's a waiting list."
Before equipping Tiger Plaza with the network wares required, Smeltzer evaluated a number of options and potential equipment suppliers. A total of 624 network ports would be installed in 28 apartment buildings and a central network operations center. The decision was made to implement a 100Base-T Fast Ethernet network with 32 Asante NetStacker II hubs and IntraStack switching equipment.
Asante's NetStacker II Ethernet hubs accommodate both 10 and 100 Mbps links. They are easily stacked to simplify the implementation of the network and facilitate future expansion. "In the 100Base-T space, I found three companies could compete pretty closely on many features," said Smeltzer. "However, Asante was the hands-down winner when price entered the equation. The Asante hub could give me true stacking capability, expansion slots for management modules and slots for fiber uplink modules at a significantly lower price than the others."
To meet the network's switching needs, Smeltzer selected an Asante IntraStack 6014 switch along with two IntraStack 6016 DSE switch modules. He reported it was important to him to work with a single vendor on the project. "Some of the vendors couldn't do both the switch and hubs. It wasn't a problem with Asante."
"The system works very smoothly and the concept has taken off. The students love it," Smeltzer said. In fact, the Tiger Park project has proven so successful, plans have been made to begin work on a very similar project just down the road at another R.W. Day property called Stadium Square. For the project, Smeltzer said he intends to place another order for Asante hubs and switches.
Asante is aggressively developing new products to meet the needs of the higher education market. In addition to shipping the NetStacker II to meet the demand for low cost 10/100Base-T hubs, Asante has recently announced the IntraCore architecture for the next generation of high port count Layer 3 Gigabit switches for sites that require very high performance. The company intends to ship two products, the IntraStack 8000 and the IntraChassis 9000, in this quarter.
