Ten <AMD knows that they won't stay competitive with Intel if they pass on copper at 0.18

Scumbria <It's the architecture!>

I agree. That's how I see it. The Cu BEOL, if implemented well, will only mean perhaps a 5% advantage to AMD. The architectural advantage will dwarf that. However, the architectural advantage doesn't appear to be as significant as was once thought. Differences in the FEOL (ie device design) could be significant and mitigate the architectural
advantage. So, I see a horse race still. Of course, if AMD
can't implement the .18um Cu at all - then a HUGE negative factor. But,I would not expect a complete bust. Even with considerable yield loss due to Cu BEOL, they should be able to ship reasonable volumes(given the size of Dresden) of the highest end Athlons. A successful execution will allow AMD to return to profitability. However, a very timely successful execution will be needed to STAY ahead of Intel.
