Sino-Japanese Trade Rebounds

Xinhua via NewsEdge Corporation : BEIJING (Aug. 29) XINHUA - Sino-Japanese trade rebounded during the second quarter this year, Business Weekly reported today.

Customs Statistics reported two-way trade between the two countries grew 9.5 percent to 29.1 billion U.S. dollars in the first half of this year.

China's exports to Japan increased 3.8 percent, since the noticeable recovery of the Japanese economy has increased demand for imports, said Xu Changwen, director of the Department of Asia and Africa under the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation.

An official from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation pointed out that China's export product mix has been improved with more technical products and less raw materials.

The total trade volume between China and Japan this year is expected to exceed 60 billion U.S. dollars, compared with 57.9 billion U.S. dollars in 1998, Xu said.

Meanwhile, China's imports from Japan increased 16.3 percent during the first half of this year to 15.1 billion U.S. dollars.

"In addition to increased domestic demand for imported products, the increasing value of the Japanese yen during recent months has also acted as a propellant for rapid growth in Chinese imports from Japan," said Xu.
