I do not have precise figures for the cost of a ring
architecture, but based on what I heard, the cost per
building is between $10K and $20K. WTC on the Last Mile
thread had recently an interesting post indicating that
the cost of fiber per building was often greatly
exaggerated and currently was running at $40K to $60K
per building (this may depend on the presence of
ducts through which fiber can be passed).

As a general rule, buildings that need OC3s ultimately
are strong candidates for fiber connection. So ARTT
seems to be placing itself in a situation where it will
compete against fiber, not a wise choice IMHO. The
low hanging fruits for BBFW are smaller office buildings
which need more than a T1 but less than OC3. I am very
suspicious of the current fashion for ring connected
architectures versus P-MP, particularly as the guru
of this fashion is Bill Frezza, who a few years ago
was the leading opponent against CDMA. I still think
that P-MP will be very successful.

This should not be construed as an endorsement of
PCMS.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
