I don't know about that. "True moderation" is usually what is detected in those who go along with the zeitgeist with only the most respectful dissent. Sometimes the zeitgeist declares that it's time for suppression of free speech, for example. Or for draconian punishment for minor offenses. Or for genocide. Also, I think the crucial distinction between the dangerous and the undangerous is not the degree of intensity of belief, but the degree of commitment to the idea that free discourse and civil argument can, over time, lead to compromises or solutions that can be lived with by all parties.
