A passing tid-bit.

While visiting one of my banks, I noticed a stack of half-size papers sitting near one of the tellers. This was in one of the half-merged Wells Fargo/Norwest banks. What caught my eye was that starting next month, if you are not an account holder at their branch, and you want to cash a check, then you will have a thumb-print image taken. This image will travel with the check. This is clearly aimed at preventing fraudulant checks from being cashed. Obviously, that is a big time market, and a big loss for the banks that cash those checks. That is one of the first legitimate uses of instant fingerprint technology I have seen--and it includes the financial incentive for someone with deep-pockets to invest in the technology. I have no idea what technology they will be using, but there will likely be more information on their web site, or in press releases. I hope it is more advanced than just an "inked" thumb print on the back of the check. They did specifically state that the bank would not be storing these thumb prints.
