Rambus, unlike DDR DRAM:

Doesn't use existing test equipment - this can be corrected over time, but it will be a problem for awhile.

Larger die size (it fills the chip's surface area with data paths) - it's cheaper to put the traces on the motherboard than on the silicon - and it may be several years, if ever, before that changes.

DDR Performance may be slightly better or slightly worse than Rambus, but cost is lower and economic production volume can come sooner and more reliably since the technology is similar to what is already in place.

Putting 16 drams and a 400MHZ controller on each chip is a technically fascinating approach, but such Rube Goldberg contraptions are rarely successful long term - just too awkward to implement.
