Eric/Solid,

ATHM users can also subscribe to AOL's 'bring your own access' service right now. ATHM supplies the IP connection with unlimited IP access. The issue is how 'good' the connectivity from the ATHM network to AOL's network is as less than desireable peering between the two can potentially defeat the value of broadband.

An interesting question to this scenario is: With access prices trending to $0, why would AOL want to assume more liability in the form of paying for the broadband local loop? AOL's greatest expense is maintaining and growing their infrastructure. Why take on more? AOL generates over $1B through eCommerce and affinity marketing. Isn't that where the real value(to users and stockholders) is?

Imagine 10 years into the future and assume ubiquity in access availability and speed. The value of providers of this access will be dwarfed by the value of companies which enable efficiencies from this access.
