PB,
Breaking my embargo on posting from The Register articles. Magee seems to be actually reporting here, to my delight.
I made a back-handed compliment earlier today about a Register article, saying it was well written by a guy they let out of the back room once in a while. My bad. I looked back and it was Magee on that one also. I'll look out for his articles in future (as they would say over there).
Intel, he said, would respond with superior branding, superior technology and better execution.
"We've a roadmap to do that," he said. "We're about to launch .18 micron technology, and the Pentium III has done better than we expected. Our volume has never been better than it is now. That's how we're going to respond."
Sounds like all systems are go. Let the games begin.
He said: "We're concerned about competition. Are we paranoid about competition from Asia? Yes, we are. We're seeing more and more first class silicon from Taiwan. Furthermore, they've got cheap capital. We are paranoid about Taiwan and we expect them to be very competitive, more so than AMD. They're a very potent force and we take them seriously."
Like Japan Inc. in the 80s? Good experience for Intel, that was, and they do need to be paranoid now.
