Seahawks acquire WR Mayes from Packers
GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN (TICKER) -- Desperate for help at wide receiver, Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren dialed his former general manager.
The Seahawks today acquired fourth-year receiver Derrick Mayes from the Green Bay Packers for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2000 draft.
It was the first deal consummated between Holmgren, who left the Packers after the 1998 season to take on the dual role of coach and general manager with the Seahawks. He had worked under GM Ron Wolf in Green Bay.
With top wideout Joey Galloway holding out in a contract dispute and fellow starter Mike Pritchard recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery, Holmgren was in the market for a receiver and landed one of his former players.
However, Mayes has been hampered by injuries in his career, missing a total of 19 games due to shoulder and ankle ailments. He had 30 catches for 394 yards and three touchdowns last year, despite missing six games.
Galloway, who led Seattle with 65 catches for 1,047 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, recently turned down a seven-year, $35 million offer from the Seahawks. He is entering the final year of a five-year contract and is scheduled to make $1.6 million in 1999.
Eight-year veteran Michael Jackson, a free agent signee, and the injured Pritchard are Seattle's most experienced receivers. The rest of the corps consists of Mario Bailey, recently signed from NFL Europe; rookies Karsten Bailey and Charlie Rogers; and second-year players Chris Jackson and Michael Jenkins.
The Packers waived five players to get to the NFL-mandated roster size of 65, including special teams ace and linebacker Lamont Hollinquest.
