G* will cover oceans. by: C_E_Jenneret 10859 of 11060
The service radius for each gateway is 1500 miles. This covers areas over water as well as over land. There is nowhere on Earth that is not within 1500 miles of some continent or island (where a gateway could be built). Go get a globe or an atlas, try drawing circles with a radii of 1500 miles, and see for yourselves. As for actual (vs. theoretical) gateways:
1) The Smith River Falls, Ontario gateway will cover areas as far away as Bermuda. This will include a large part of the eastern North Atlantic. 2) The Aussaguel, France gateway will cover areas from Morocco and Tunisia to Iceland and the Faroe Islands. these two gateways alone will cover most of the North Atlantic, including major shipping and air routes. 3) The Bosque Allegre, Argentina; Presidente Prudente, Brazil; and Delareyville, S. Africa gateways will cover most of the South Atlantic. Delareyville will also cover parts of the Indian Ocean. 4) The Caribbean will be covered several times over, from sites in Texas, Mexico, Nicaragua and Venezuela. 5) The Mediterranean will be covered several times over, from sites in France, Italy and Turkey. 6) The Pacific will take longer to completely cover, but areas within 1500 miles of China, Korea, and North and South America will have service by the end of '99. Gateways in Australia and Hawaii (I seem to recall)will fill in major gaps.
Finally, if ocean coverage was not available, why would G* affiliates be making phone units for ships?
Best of Luck --
