Sega's Dreamcast Machine Sees
Strong Demand Ahead of Launch

excerpt from An INTERACTIVE JOURNAL News Roundup

Sega Enterprises Ltd. said its Dreamcast game console has received 300,000 pre-orders in the U.S., putting it ahead of the hot debut of Sony Corp.'s Playstation machine four years ago.

Sony and Nintendo Reduce Prices of Consoles to Fight Sega (Aug. 17)

Retailers will begin selling the Dreamcast console on Sept. 9, 1999, with a suggested retail price of $199. Sega said it expects to sell more than 400,000 systems in the first 30 days, one million by Dec. 31 and 1.5 million by March 31, 2000.

Sadly, I can count myself among the 300,000 pre-orders. I will also forward that I am more than willing to pre-order the new Playstation II (and its increased memory and processor horsepower) as soon as it becomes available. Just trying to do my best to support or semiconductor industry! As an aside: the specs on these machines, especially the SNE unit, are incredible. We should not forget to factor these game consoles into our view of demand for silicon ... SNE & partner are willing to invest $1.2bn to satisfy what it sees as the potential demand for PSII.
