Can't speak for anyone other than myself, but I've lived in big cities, suburbia, small towns, etc... Travelled around a bit too. But I like it out in the sticks. I guess I'm a bit like an old man that I saw interviewed on TV one time. I think he may have been from the Peace River area. When asked what he thought of the "new people" moving into his neck of the woods, he replied, "Time to move on... I can see the lights of other cabins at night".
That's just about how I feel. When I travel, I look for the places where a lot of people don't or won't go. Down bumpy dirt roads that come to a dead end where you have to hike out to the end of some high windy lookout on a rocky point of land to watch the waves come crashing in. Or maybe some winding road into a pine forest where the needles make a 2-inch thick carpet. I like places where you don't have to worry much about whether you left the windows down on your car, or if you locked the door to your cabin, or if someone will try to steal the canoe off the roof of your truck while you're out hiking.
Cities are OK to visit sometimes, but the air tastes like most of the oxygen is gone out of it...maybe because it's been breathed too many times, or because of all of the cars, trucks and buses. Too much noise... sirens, airbrakes, and just plain old "surface noise". You usually can't see the sky properly... too many houses or big buildings in every direction. I like a world where half of what I see is sky. Every morning I like to get up and look out in every direction to see what colour the horizon is and what kind of clouds are in sight so that I can plan out my day.
Guess these things all have to do with your world view... a pretty subjective thing IMHO...
That said, I just finished baking a peach pie and am trying to figure out how to use up a big basket of nectarines which I, in some temporary state of madness, purchased yesterday... I was kind of thinking of pickling them in halves in some kind of liqueur, but any and all alternative ideas would be welcome...(-: |
