When we went to Maui several years ago, I had set up a catamaran whale watch reservation, which was departing at 7:00 am one morning. And that morning rolled around and we almost decided to skip it. To this day I am so glad we decided to go. I will never forget the first sight of the ten-foot-wide flukes as they emerged as if in slow motion from the water. What struck me was the feeling of immense leviathan animal power in them. If anything, that impressed me more than the sight of a breach, fairly close to the boat. I remember thinking that this whale just had to have a sense of humor. He was clearly having the time of his life.
