The best M$ and Intel could do to rain on Sun's parade today was to announce they got a prototype 64-bit Windows $2000 running in the lab. Whoop-de-doo--Sun and SCO both announced 64-bit Merced prototype Unix systems months ago. Here's the best clip:

Availability

Microsoft is committed to releasing a beta version of 64-bit Windows in the first half of 2000, and expects to release 64-bit Windows, production developer tools and key BackOffice applications (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server) with commercial Merced systems available later next year. Final system requirements, pricing and packaging will be announced separately.

Let's save that one to our huge local hard disk and look at it again "later next year".

A challenge to SUNW management: Get a working StarPortal actually into all these big ISP's who tepidly announced with you, plus a million or two Coronas out there before Wintel ships 64-bit NT. Lord knows that should give you plenty of time.
