<What about stable and functioning chipsets and mobos????> I am lost here... :) Are you talking about Profusion/Confusion shipset? Or Camino 820 AGP incompatible boards? Or 4-way Xeon systems? :0 :O Speak up, student!
Ali,
Nothing insidious here, just what seems to be common sense. See my post above (#70471). Your reply illustrates my point. Intel has indeed had it's share of chipset and CPU challenges (Profusion, 820, CuMine, Covington, etc)over the last year or so. The difference is that Intel usually seems to have overlap and tiering in CPU and chipset technologies, so that if the chipset transitions don't go as planned, they have a bailout position for the CPU's - 820 delay just means longer life to 440BX, Profusion (very low volume/profit expectations)delay just means more 2x and 4x Xeon servers, CuMine delays just means extending Katmai 1-2 quarters, etc. They seem to manage their way through their own messes with low inventory levels and increasing profits. A longwinded way of saying that chipset and motherboard snafus at Intel don't seem to get in the way of processor (profit) ramps. Merced will be a whole new ballgame, but Intel seems to have control over the initial infrastructure for Merced and their own statements imply much higher PR expectations than revenue/profits for quite some time. IA-32 will be the volume/revenue/profit engine as far as the eye can see, IA-64 will generate the PR.
AMD doesn't have any of these safety nets for K7, their stated intent is ASAP ramp to millions units/qtr - it either all works all at once(CPU and chipset/motherboard ramp)or...
Do I get a gold star or should I go stand in the corner Master?
