I think I misunderstood your argument, then. I thought its tendency was to exculpate moderates for inaction in the face of massive evils orchestrated by true believers.

My position remains that "extremism" ought to apply to the particular dispositions around rule-making and dispute-settlement in society, not to the degree of passion one feels about one's belief.

I feel deeply that religious belief is half insane and half pathetic; but I certainly don't want to deprive those who buy it and enjoy it of their churches or prayer rugs or icons or incense or transubstantiations or miracles. I don't even want to deprive them of creches in front of the courthouse, because they enjoy it, and it seems innocuous enough to me.

(Of course I do resent having been subjected to religious ritual in school as a child, since I attended a public school for which my atheist parents paid taxes. But my childhood experiences at the hands of true believers is a different subject.)
