Do you think that the Allies were wrong to exceed pure defense and impose more or less democratic regimes on the Axis powers? Do you think that the SCLC was wrong to commit acts of civil disobedience, and to persuade people to put life and limb at risk for the sake of the movement? Was there reason enough for the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War, or should we all be British subjects?

All of these are reactive situations. Certainly there are times when opposition to imposition may in turn require imposition. But I do think there is a difference between this and the belief of one's own views are fundamentally right and should be imposed on everyone.

it started out a discussion of conviction

Conviction - any conviction - becomes a threat when people who hold covictions refuse to admit the possibility of error and engage in reasoned discusion with those who do not share their conviction. I think this applies equally - to get back to our original subject - to the PC left and the religious right.
