Heck, if I'm flustered because I think it's overvalued at a hundred, I'll probably be apoplectic if it hits $200!
I know I come off as very Rambus negative, I actually post more negatively than I feel. What pushes me is the one-sidedness of many of the high expectations posts on the rambus list. This is a new, costly, proposed replacement for technology that may not need replacing - or maybe it does. Certainly rambus has a chance at success, especially if Intel pushes it without regard to possible negative consequences to Intel itself.
Rambus is great for improving serial access to memory (bandwidth), but doesn't do anything for ramdom access (latency), but doesn't hurt it either. It's called Random Access Memory because it needs to support random access, not serial access. Almost all serial demands come from devices far slower than any of the RAM types, things like disk drives and network connections.
Ultimately, Rambus could prove cheaper than 64 bit SDRAM and its evolutionary followers due to Rambus's efficient use of board real estate, but until that time, I don't see a compelling need for it (unless Intel is doing the compelling).
But it may do just fine. Intel continues to push Rambus and it's gotten some momentum behind it. It's just that I see these posts that state that Rambus will replace all other memory in little more than a year, with a vacuum where the alternate, perhaps less likely, outcomes should be and I find that I am compelled to rush in and fill it.
