Pentland Firth Has Encouraging Drilling Results At Montclerg Project Near Timmins, Ontario
TORONTO, ONTARIO--Pentland Firth Ventures Ltd. (TSE - PFO) completed an eight hole, 1,644 metre diamond drilling program on the Montclerg gold project between July 19 and August 6, 1999. Four of the holes targeted the high grade, CMX Zone, while the remaining four holes tested the Montclerg Zone, a lower grade, bulk tonnage zone (408,100 tonnes at 4.5 g/t Au). Although these results are encouraging, they do not materially increase the known resource. Pentland holds an option to acquire 100 percent of the Montclerg property from Prospectors Alliance Corporation (formerly Montclerg Resources Ltd.), subject to a sliding scale net smelter returns (NSR) royalty ranging from 1.5 percent to 2.5 percent, based on the price of gold.
Drill holes PCM-01 through PCM-04 were completed at the CMX Zone, a target situated on the Pipestone Fault system near the southern boundary of the property. Mineralization is located along lithologic contacts separating metamorphosed and sheared sediments, felsic intrusives and ultramafic volcanic flows.
Assay intervals from each hole carrying more than 1 g/t Au are tabulated below.
PCM-01 was an angle hole drilled to a depth of 231.0 metres. It encountered variably altered and tectonically deformed sediments, intrusives and ultramafic volcanics. Broad intervals of geochemically significant gold mineralization (greater than 300 ppb Au) were intersected within a swarm of quartz-ankerite veins. The best assay return was 1.88 g/t Au over 1.0 metres where these veins carry arsenopyrite.
PCM-02 was an angle hole collared 50 metres to the west of PCM-01, and encountered a thick sequence of altered metasediments, a long interval of felsic intrusive, and a wedge of strongly altered ultramafic volcanics, bottoming in felsic intrusive at 287.0 metres. Again, a wide zone of strongly anomalous gold was intersected; the best value was 4.39 g/t Au over 0.6 metres.
PCM-03 was collared 50 metres further to the west and was drilled at an angle to a depth of 200.0 metres. Numerous zones of arsenopyrite-bearing, quartz-ankerite veining were identified within all lithologies. The best intersection was 2.17 g/t Au over 2.0 metres.
PCM-04 was drilled 50 metres to the east of PCM-01. The hole penetrated overburden to 33.0 metres and was terminated in a diabase dyke at 36.0 metres. No samples were taken for assay.
Drill holes PCM-05 through PCM-08 tested the Montclerg Zone, comprising sulfidized zones up to 15-20 metres thick within massive to pillowed, mafic volcanics having silicified flowtops. Mineralization occurs as fine-grained pyrite and arsenopyrite disseminations. Sufficient drilling had been completed to allow the calculation of a resource by previous workers in 1985.
PCM-05 was an angle hole drilled to a depth of 200.0 metres. It encountered variably altered mafic flows over its entire length. The best intersection was 1.96 g/t Au over 8.6 metres, including 2.39 g/t Au over 5.8 metres.
PCM-06 was collared 75 metres to the west of the previous drill hole and cut variably altered and mineralized mafic volcanics over its entire 233.0 metre length. The most encouraging results came from a 3.0 metre-thick, sulfidized zone that carried 6.18 g/t Au, which included a 1.0 metre interval of 13.72 g/t Au.
PCM-07 was located 42 metres east of PCM-06 and was drilled on an angle to a depth of 200.0 metres. The hole encountered both altered and unaltered mafic flows and interflow tuff-agglomerates with several broad sulfidized zones. Intervals with notable mineralization are listed below.
PCM-08 was collared 125 metres west of PCM-05. It penetrated a sequence of tuff-agglomerate fragmental rocks and mafic flows. A zone of well-developed pyrite-arsenopyrite mineralization was encountered in the bottom 20 metres of the hole. The most notable mineralized interval carried 2.13 g/t Au over 1.7 metres.
