TSMC, UMC, Chartered May See US$2.2 Bln Chip Shortage, CT Says

Taipei, Sept. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., United Microelectronics Corp. and Singapore's Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., which together dominate the world's chip foundry market, are estimated to have a combined shortage worth NT$70 billion ($2.2 billion) next year, the Commercial Times reported, without citing sources. TSMC is expecting to win orders of 4 million eight-inch equivalent wafers in 2000, more than double the 1.87 million wafers slated for shipment this year, the paper said. UMC President Chang Chung-teh said the company will continue to raise its average selling prices on stronger-than-expected demand, it said.

The foundry business -- in which chips are made to custom designs -- is expanding as the global semiconductor market recovers from a three-year slump.
