Intel previews Bluetooth notebooks VP Frank Spindler demos the technology Intel hopes will pave way for better wireless-enabled notebooks.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- Intel Corp. is working to turn notebook PCs into more secure, less power-hungry wireless devices.
Next year, the company will deliver a Bluetooth radio module that is designed to make it easier for PC OEMs to design notebooks capable of using the short-range wireless technology, according to Frank Spindler, vice president and marketing director of Intel's mobile and handheld products group.
Several radio modules, in development now, will be available for OEMs sometime next year, Spindler said.
Speaking here at the Intel Developer Forum, Spindler demonstrated a Bluetooth-enabled notebook. The demo was conducted on a notebook of Intel's own design running a 500MHz mobile Pentium III chip that Intel will introduce in October.
Developing SMBus Driver Spindler also announced that Intel is working with the Smart Battery Implementers Forum to deliver the SMBus Driver, a bus driver for Windows 98 and Windows 2000 for connecting mobile devices to instruments.
Intel (Nasdaq:INTC) will also be licensing to OEMs voltage regulation technology, called Mobile Voltage Positioning, that works to reduce thermal design power. The technology, Spindler said, will enable longer battery life on thinner and lighter notebooks while reducing overall voltage costs.
In the area of security, Intel is also working on Preboot Authentication Service, or PAS, which would enable notebooks to be equipped with user-authentication devices, such as a thumbprint reader, that can authenticate a user before the system's operating system is booted.
Spindler did not specify when PAS, the voltage reduction technology or the SMBus Driver would show up in commercially available products.
