It looks like Sun will be directly competing with Wind River.

Brad:

I'm not very bullish on Wind right now at this price.

The good news just keeps coming. Isn't software
a great business. Love those *high* barriers to entry
and industry wide standards.

It looks like Sun will be by passing the RTOS companies
and selling JavaOS directly to the chip makers - see the press
release below. Who's afraid of Microsoft, who's afraid
of Sun - not WindRiver?

Did I see Wind was down 10% today? I might be bullish if I
could buy Wind for $8/share.

Cheers,
Dave

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., April 2 (Reuter) - Motorola Inc's Advanced Digital Consumer Division on Wednesday unveiled a JavaOS operating system which can run on Motorola's MPC821 PowerPC microprocessor.

The PowerPC version of the JavaOS 1.0 operating system will be available for licensing from JavaSoft, a business unit of Mountain View, California-based Sun Microsystems Inc . Hugh Symons Group PLC of Britain adapted the system to run on the PowerPC chip, Motorola said.

JavaOS is a small operating system that executes Java directly on
computers, not requiring any other host operating system. The MPC821
PowerPC chip is used mainly in handheld, portable computers.

"The flexibility and compactness of the JavaOS operating system is ideal for the MPC821," said Ken Edwards, marketing manager for Motorola's Advanced Digital Consumer Division.

"JavaOS combined with the PowerPC architecture's unique scaleability and processing power capabilities provides developers with an ideal, high performance solution for handheld, portable communication products."

Motorola, based in Schaumburg, Ill., provides wireless communications,
semiconductors and electronic systems.
