Those who believe that are overstating it, don't you think? If one believes in America first, it doesn't mean we would retreat from world affairs. We would still be engaged, we just wouldn't be empire building.

If Buchanan had been president during WWI we wouldn't have had a WWII. Woodrow Wilson, Lloyd George, and Clemenceau saddled Germany and Austria with regimes whose character was dictated by the Allies. Any historian could have told them that political forms imposed by the victors never last. WWII was a mopping up of WWI.
