Fourteen Months, and Counting
The June figures from the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ) reflect reports earlier this month from Applied Materials Inc. and Semiconductor Equipment & Materials International indicating that the capital equipment business is still struggling to get back on its feet in many instances. The SEAJ said sales by its reporting members totaled $2.1 billion in June, down 6 percent from June 1998's sales, the 14th straight month sales have been down on a year-to-year basis. Wafer processing equipment, the largest segment at $1.35 billion, was down 12.9 percent from a year ago. The only equipment segment to show improvement over June 1998 was assembly equipment, which posted a 23.4 percent increase to $163 million.
