Thirty years ago, it was considered socially acceptable to tell racist jokes in public. It was considered socially acceptable to make denigrating remarks about women in mixed company. It was considered socially acceptable to exclude Jews from social clubs, and to prohibit selling one's home to a Jew or a black. And so forth. I don't think social standards have slipped, I think they've improved.

What you are considering social standards are attempts by the middle and lower-middle classes to imitate their perception of the upper classes. As the son of recent immigrants, you aspire to social-climb, which is not a bad thing, but you've got it wrong. If you think about it, rich men, e.g., Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, now flaunt their wealth by dressing comfortably.
