I apparently didn't get my point across. I was responding solely to your aside that I quoted. It dismissed self reporting and those who believe those reports. My point was that the same is true for those who find lies in the reports because the reports are useless--neither truth nor lie. I think this business about Japanese PCs is one of the best quality pieces of information available. It was made by a qualified observer who is in a position to know. There is so little good information available, I wouldn't want to unintentionally give the appearance of denigrating any of it. We have basically two kinds of information. One is the ubiquitous self reporting. The other is first hand observations of people who are somehow involved in this thing and who may or may not be reliable for a variety of reasons. The self reporting, as I said, is all but useless. Anyone who thinks any valid conclusions, either polly or doomer, can be drawn from it is..., er, fill in the blank. The snippets of reliable, first hand anecdotal information we have are just that--an arbitrary collection of snippets. Putting them together into some overall conclusion is like the blind men and the elephant. The best we can do is wade around barefoot in all the pieces in the context of our own temperaments, experiences, and world views and get a gut feel for what we "feel" is in the offing. Annointing any of it as truth or lie is either naive or intellectually dishonest. Karen p.s. A while back, Ron took a lot of heat for saying he was watching the folks most in the know to see how they were reacting as a cue. Seems to me that this third type of information is at least as good as relying on self reports and arbitrary snippets.
