According to Mr. Ragavan, Siara has plans to patent its own optical protocol, called Synchronous Optical Network (SONet) II. Mr. Ragavan hopes to respond to his customer's application needs by custom-designing application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) that allow him to build specific abilities -- and "systems on a chip" -- into the networking gear. In addition to constructing the networking equipment, Siara also plans to build its own management software and applications. Mr. Ragavan would like to ride the latest wave in telecom: creating software and networking equipment that allow CLECs to quickly deploy their own value-added IP services. <b/ He maintains that it's no longer enough to build bandwidth; you've got to build a network on which a company can easily deploy revenue-enhancing services such as virtual private networks.
