LARGO, Fla., June 3 (Reuter) - AT&T Paradyne said Monday it achieved what it called an industry breakthrough that will enable customers worldwide to have much faster Internet access along with simultaneous voice service on a single phone line.
The AT&T unit said new GlobeSpan Rate Adaptive Digital Subscriber Line (RADSL) technology produces data transmission speeds up to 400 times faster than a 14.4 kilobit per second modem, which is the average speed currently of most PC modems.
It said telecom equipment manufacturers are now licensing GlobeSpan RADSL technology as the basis for a new generation of high-speed Internet access and data services products.
The GlobeSpan RADSL offers varying transmission speeds depending on whether the transmission is traveling to or from a user's modem.... As a result, RADSL can transmit information "downstream" into a home or business at rates of 600 kilobits to 7 megabits per second, and "upstream," or from the user's modem to the outside world, at a return rate of 128 kilobits to 1 megabit.
The company said GlobeSpan RADSL products will be available in August 1996. Initially, these products will have downstream transmission data rates up to 2.3 megabits per second and upstream data rates up to one megabit per second.
It said the the full range of automatic rate adaptive speeds (up to seven megabits per second downstream) will be available in November 1996.
AT&T GlobeSpan techhnology will enable telephone companies to satisfy current market demand immediately, while also protecting their installed customer base against other access providers (cable TV, satellite and wireless) who plan to offer Internet and Intranet services in the future.
The company said it had licensed the technology to about ten U.S.-based telecom equipment makers and another 11 firms overseas, and that more licensees are expected shortly.
AT&T said its GlobeSpan technology is a significant advancement over other digital subscriber line technologies because its transmission speed is "rate adaptive" based on the length and signal quality of an existing phone line.
In other words, RADSL products will have the option to select the highest practical transmission speed automatically or as specified by the telecommunications service provider.
This variable rate feature helps ensure quality service to all customers, even those residing a long distance from the telephone company's nearest equipment location, AT&T said
