And unfortunately constantly reminded of it. Down the block from my house is one of those classic grocery stores with the aisles maybe spaced about three claustrophobic feet apart and a quarter inch layer of dust on every can on the shelf. It's called the Eezy Freezy. And up on the sign over the store (one of those white ones where you put in the black block letters like they still have on some movie marquees) it says, "We Give S&H Green Stamps!!" (the word "green" is, of course, written in green letters). My neighborhood is kind of very self consciously retro, and apparently some years ago they took down the S&H thing off the sign and everyone complained, so they put it back.

My mother did the S&H thing religiously. And another kind (red instead of green) that for the life of me I can't recall.
