Who says "the worse the society the more laws"? I frankly think our society isn't all that bad, really. At least not compared to what COULD happen to you in the past- especially if you were different. It is hard to measure the qualitative differences in society. I don't know how ot do it- and I don't think anyone else does either. My idealistic view of the past makes me think things are worse- but are they really? Kids (for example) are not allowed to be anywhere NEAR as cruel to each other at school as they were when I was a kid. Kid on kid verbal abuse if taken much more seriously- as is kid on kid physical abuse. Parental abuse is taken more seriously- that too, must be a good thing. Many fewer childhood injuries from unsafe toys, fewer fatal car accidents for children because of carseat laws, fewer head traumas because of bicycle helmet laws. Do these make society worse? I don't think so. Yes- I miss the idea that mom stays home, and values are king, and everyone knows the difference between right and wrong- but then I think...wait...whose "right" and whose "wrong". DO I want to have to live like a hypocrite in a Christian value world? or a Muslim value world? or a Hindu value world? I think I could get along with the Budhists but that's about it.

I think when you look back with nostalgia on a society that never really existed except in your imagination, it is easy to say things are worse now. I have said it myself. But you know what? I don't think things are worse now. And sometimes, when I am feeling optimistic, I think maybe we are capable of change and as humans the best may be yet to come. Of course I don't feel like that very often. But given the sheer NUMBERS of people now, living cheek by jowl, with all their different cultures and beliefs, I am amazed our society is as peaceful as it it.
