They kill themselves. And they endanger others who go out to try to rescue or aid them. And they put an enormous financial drain on society to care for them when their stupidity or incompetence gets them in trouble. Do you have any idea of the cost or human resources involved in mounting a full scale search and rescue for a kayaker whose empty kayak drifts up on the shore?
