In the first place, there is no way Reagan could ever have been a member of the SDS (Students for a Democratic Society): that was a sixties organization! He just moved from being a Democrat to being a Republican -- not nearly so wide a gap.

As for me, when I was young, my elders were more radical than I was. For years, I never even opened a newspaper (all through the Korean War & the McCarthy era, for example). I was NOT INTERESTED in politics (although as a child I had been). Even now, my interest in U.S. politics (as against Russian politics, say) is sporadic. But I would nevertheless say that I am more "radical" now than I was in my twenties.
