You're on target, as usual, X.

All societies change, in some respects for the worse, in others for for the better. But, on balance, anyone living in the United States today should consider himself/herself blessed. It is pure nostalgic romanticism to bemoan those non-existent days when things were better, IMO.

For example, I know I personally would have been dead at the age of eight in an earlier era, or in many another country today. I had inoperable osteomylitis, and sulfa was not helping. So I became a guinea pig for penicillin -- the first civilian ever to receive it. It saved my life. If I had not received penicillin, I would not be around today to moan and groan about the passing of the "Good Old Days."
