Of course all such choices (or edits, if you prefer) can be traumatic to those going through them, and to many they seem to be a 'boom'. Think of the enormous changes in attitudes towards race over the course of our lifetimes, or towards marriage and divorce. These changes were not painless, and in many ways we're still working through them. When the dust settles, will the new consensus be any less functional than the old?
