It depends. On race, it has taken an enormously long time to make much progress, but it is an extension of pre- existing values in the American polity, and therefore constitutes a harmonization of practice with ideal, so one hopes that when the dust settles we will be better off. On marriage, I think that some changes are good (for example, allowing married women to retain assets), and some are dubious (for example, the tendency towards a two- career marriage). On the divorce front, I think some of the changes are bad. For example, I think it should be harder to get a divorce, especially when children are involved. Since change can be both good and bad, it is difficult to predict. |
