Lots of families "couldn't make it" in the past. They got to starve and die. That was the way it was. If you had no shoes you walked barefoot. If all you had was rags you wore rags. Do not underestimate the misery that was prevalent in the past. The kind of misery you can see in the third world we had here. We still have misery, but there is less. And it is less likely that one will starve in the street, or have one's children die from preventable illnesses.

As for "time off" during the middle ages- you are imo out of touch with the middle ages. Time off was not a concept in an agrarian society. You worked at a backbreaking pace during the harvest times and hoped to hell you grew enough so you wouldn't starve in the winter when you had "time off". If you think they took Holidays when food needed getting in I think you are wrong.
